Waste Minimisation

The objective of the project Waste Minimisation - operated by the Polish Environmental Partnership Foundation, is to demonstrate how adopting a systematic approach to identifying and carrying out often small but very practical steps to minimize waste can reduce a company's environmental impacts and achieve substantial cost savings. Waste Minimisation helps companies minimize the amount of solid and liquid wastes generated, reduce energy and water consumption and decrease emissions. Minimizing wastes is linked to improving management, increasing production efficiency and reducing operating costs. Thanks to the project, companies can improve internal communication and information exchange, engage employees in taking practical action for the environment and promoting their responsibility externally.

Project implementation:

The project is implemented through Waste Minimisation Team established within each participating company. Each of these Teams has a Waste Champion a person nominated by the company to lead waste minimisation initiatives. Members of the Team should have knowledge of the company and production processes as well as be familiar with maintenance, finance, management, health and safety and other procedures.

The project delivery begins with a comprehensive waste audit. The audit is conducted by the Waste Team with the assistance of Clean Business Programme specialists. The objective is to analyse production processes in terms of their waste implications and estimate waste minimisation potential in various areas of company operations.

Waste Minimisation implementation involves Clean Business specialists working together with Waste Minimisation Teams of individual companies participating in the scheme. The Teams meet regularly and with support from Clean Business specialists work on solutions to identified problems. They can also use the Ecological Information Centre of the Polish Environmental Partnership Foundation.

Specialized consultants are brought in to respond to specific needs and circumstances. Companies involved in the scheme are also provided with opportunities to learn from each others experience and from other companies participating in Clean Business Programme.
